Suicide Bomber Kills 15, Injures 40 at Living Faith Church, Bauchi

At least 15 people have been
confirmed dead and 40 injured
in Bauchi state after a suicide
bomber drove a car full of
explosives into Living Faith Church this morning. According to Security forces
at a road block nearby, the
bomber forced his car through
the checkpoint and drove into
the church in Yelwa, on the
outskirts of the city of Bauchi. The Bauchi State Commissioner
of Police, Mohammed Ladan , onfirmed the incident. "We
have a checkpoint not far
from the church which
prevented the bomber from
gaining access to his target. So
he rammed the car into a security gate and the car
exploded, killing him and
eight other people. Many
people were injured but I
can't give you any precise
number because the hospital is still trying to take a toll." However,
the head of the
Nigerian Red Cross in Bauchi
state, Adamu Abubakar, told
AFP he counted 35 people
injured at an area hospital. Reports say the suicide
bomber drove into the church
compound at around 10am
and detonated his explosives
as worshippers left the early
morning service. Residents say the explosion
caused the church building to
collapse, prompting dozens of
people to flee seeking refuge,
but some ran straight into a
fire raging outside. "There was confusion as
residents and churchgoers
tried to flee. Some of them
out of fright fell into the fire
caused by the explosion," said
resident Timothy Joshua. According to a mechanic,
Aliku Jon who witnessed the
incident, "I had just left after
the morning service and was
out of the church when I
heard a loud explosion. I rushed back and there were
dozens of people lying in
pools of blood…many were
injured including two police
officers." Presently, the area has been
cordoned off by the security
agents who have blocked
even the emergency workers
from going into the church. Although no group has
claimed responsibility for the
attack at the time of this
report, many believe that the
Islamic sect, Boko Haram is responsible for the attacks. What a sad
loss. May the souls of the departed

Dana Air PlaneHeading from Abujato Lagos Crashes inIju, Lagos

Sad news reaching us is that a
commercial airliner operated
by DANA Air has crashed in
the Iju area of Lagos. The
aircraft was arriving from
Abuja on a local flight when it crashed into a powerline in
the area. According to the report by
Sahara Reporters, the plane
had 153 passengers on board. Femi Oke-Osanyinpolu , Lagos state emergency state
manager, said Sunday that
casualty numbers are
unknown. Harold Demuren , head of the Nigerian Civil Aviation
Authority (NCAA), confirmed
the crash. He said the Dana Air
flight was heading from Lagos
to Abuja in Nigeria. He said
federal authorities were on their way to the site of the
crash. This news gives me shivers.
Just minutes after reporting
news of the bomb blast in
Bauchi, now this. The number of casualties has
not been ascertained, but I
pray for the lives of all those
that were on board that plane
and people that were in the
area where it crashed. May God be with us all. UPDATE: The NCAA has
confirmed that there were no
survivors on the plane. Such
sad news.

Plane crash inNigeria's largestcity kills at least140

(Reuters) Report Typo Send Feedback Reports say more than 140
people are dead after a
passenger plane slammed into
a two-storey building in
Nigeria's largest city of Lagos
shortly after taking off. Harold Denuren, head of the
Nigerian Civil Aviation
Authority, said the Dana Air
flight was heading from Lagos
to Abuja in Nigeria. The Lagos state government
said in a statement that 153
people were on the Dana Air
flight Sunday while
emergency officials have put
the figure at 140 to 150. Yushau Shuaib, spokesman for
the National Emergency
Management Agency, said
they were still trying to get
an official manifest on the
flight. Sometimes flights in Nigeria issue paper tickets and
don't record all passengers via
computer. Firefighters searching for
survivors have pulled at least
one body from the building,
which was cratered by the
plane. Two firetrucks and about 50
rescue personnel converged
on the crash site an hour after
it happened. A military
helicopter also flew overhead. The plane appeared to have
landed on its belly, rather than
taking a nosedive. It first
crashed through a furniture
shop and then into residential
buildings next to the shop. The nose of the plane was
embedded into the three-
storey apartment building,
damaging one part of the
structure. Fire still smoldered
everywhere. Al-Jazeera is also reporting
that witnesses on the ground
believe the aircraft may have
hit a power line and crashed
into the building. Dana Air took to the skies in
November 2008 and now
operates 18 daily flights to
four Nigeria cities: Abuja,
Lagos, Port Harcourt and Uyo. The weather in Lagos, a port
city of 8 million, on Sunday
was clear and sunny. Lagos' international airport is
a major hub for West Africa
and saw 2.3 million passengers
pass through it in 2009,
according to the most recent
statistics provided by the Federal Airports Authority of
Nigeria. In August 2010, the U.S.
announced it had given
Nigeria the FAA's Category 1
status, its top safety rating
that allows the nation's
domestic carriers to fly directly to the U.S. However, in a nation where
the state-run electricity
company is in tatters, state
power and diesel generators
sometimes both fail at
airports, making radar screens go blank. With files from The Associated
